I feel like the stray cat
Ripping its way through my garbage
Flipping the black plastic cap
Off the trashcan out back

I know there’s maggots at the bottom
I belong to someone else so i don’t need this
Yet i keep digging deeper into
Whatever i can sink my teeth in

It’s foul
It’s putrid
In fact the act makes me sick to my stomach
A swan dive into filth for base-sick nutrients

I get fed daily yet here i am
So greedy i’m feeding on secondhand
That’s been sitting here since God-knows when
I wear the crumbs around my throat as a talisman

Deeper, my body feels covered in it
I know it’ll take more than a dozen licks
To get my hair back in all the right places
Enough to feign feral innocence

I hear a car pull into the driveway
And i scramble out not a second too late
I hop the fence and leave through the gate
With my limp tail drooping between my legs
